SAY NO TO SHARK'S FINS
I am easy-going on many issues but the topic on shark's fins always manage to rile me up. On today's edition on the Straits Time, it is being reported that consumption of shark's fins in Singapore jumped from 182 tonnes in 2006 to over 470 tonnes last year. Globally, between 40million and 70million sharks get killed for their fins each year.
Singapore is one of the world's top 5 shark's fins importers, alongside Hong Kong - the world's top consumer of shark's fins - China, Taiwan and Indonesia.
Apparently 2007 was a boom year so more people could afford eating it. The article also suggested that since more people are getting married and serving shark's fins in banquets, demand has increased.
I don't get why people love eating it so much. It is kinda tasteless (in every sense of the word) isn't it?
Marine conservationist Michael Aw estimates that over 30 sharks have to be killed to feed a wedding banquet of 300.
Arg. As if it didn't piss me off enough, I read this:
"Having shark's fins at the banquet adds a touch of class and more importantly, it makes my parents and guests happy," says Kelvin "Pit-dweller" Young, 31, who is getting married at the Orchard Hotel next week. Apparently he is aware of the threat posed to sharks but will be serving the dish anyway.
Class?
Right, and that is why he is getting married in Orchard Hotel.

my dear..
I think it is more than 300 sharks have to be killed for a banquet of 300 guests..
(so, ave 1 shark per guest huh?? wow..)*alarming fact*
Maybe we need to think abt wat other dishes can we served so as to encourage newly weds to have alternative substitutes and yet would not make them "lose face" ....
Maybe the title for your next blog can be "say NO to shark's fins and YES TO...." and all your frens or anyone who reads your blog could throw in constructive suggestions and you compile them and published the list on your subsequent entry.
Sounds good?? =D
pr
ooppss.. gal, you are right. It is 30 sharks, not 300... *phew*

SAY NO TO SHARKSFIN!! I can almost imagine myself wearing a sharks' head mask and marching down the streets already.
Why don't people get it? It's NOT RIGHT to be eating sharksfin! And it's not that glamorous a dish if you think about it. It's just a bloody fin lor. Go munch on pomfret fins if you have to. Pomfret also very nice!
SOOOOO cute. Promfret fins? hahaha sooo cute.
