RocketJim's Top Awards

It is one week before Christmas and just a mere 2 before the New Year comes along. How have you been spending your time or money?

So as usual, like how women fantasize about having babies after turning 25, this time of the year, most people reflect on the past year. Today, I am reflecting on material goods and other superfluous stuff. Let's talk heavier stuff next time. Afterall, RocketJim is still happily in love with Loverboy (Loverboy! Loverboy! Loverboy! Bahaha). This is kinda my first time doing something like this so just enjoy and take everything with a pinch of salt. WARNING: Duh. It will be totally biased. :P

Cosmetics:

Base - I had been using Bella Skincare's tinted UV base for ages and thought it rocked for me. I mean, it did cover minor flaws pretty well and brightened my face before other works. But I discovered Chanel's Le Blanc Illuminating Base. I think every girl should own one. It is light, it gives skin a very lovely dewy look and you only need a little. Plus it smells great! If you have good skin, you don't even need anything after applying this. Downside: No UV protection.

Foundation - Still searching for the perfect one. I am still wondering if I prefer only pressed powder or powder foundation. I was using Paul & Joe's liquid foundation and loose powder together for the better part of this year. I like that it wasn't cakey and quite light. But it wasn't perfect. Right now I am using Chanel's Mat Lumiere powder foundation. I love it......but I don't know if it is perfect. Still searching. I prefer a matt, powdery look than the liquid, dewy kind. Dewy looks oily on me. For your information though, Japanese brands also make very very good powders. The Shiseido Maquillage range is good.

Loose Powder - Paul & Joe. Hands down. Plus it looks great on the dressing table. Downside: Not portable!

Eyeshadow - Shu Uemura. Again, hands down. This is the only brand I know that can outlast a flight to New York. Even if your eyelids are super oily, this brand stays.

Eyeliner - I use L'oreal liquid eyeliner for most days. On long flights, I use Estee Lauder's waterproof liquid eyeliner. I am using my 5th bottle/pen now. I think the pen is easy to grip and the product is very long lasting. Unfortunately, I think it is too expensive. L'oreal is about $16.50? Estee Lauder's is about $30-$40. I don't use pencil liners.

Mascara - I have tried a HUGE range of brands. Lancome, Helena Rubenstein, Estee Lauder, Shu Uemura etc. I thought Helena Rubenstein was pretty good but at about $42 for ONE stick, I didn't think it was too feasible...right now I am loving Majorca's Viper lash and Maybelline's Waterproof Turbo Boost. One for lash lengthening and the latter for volume. I think Maybelline makes great mascaras at good price. In the USA, I can get them for about USD$3. *smug* Good product at super good value. My all time favourite was KOSE's Dolly Lash. It was one stick with 2 functions. One end of the stick lengthen your lashes and the other end adds volume. It WAS A GREAT PRODUCT. Best I had ever used. It was $42 the last time I bought it and now KOSE decided to split the stick into 2. SO if I wanted to buy it, I would now have to pay more than $80. Smart eh? So Maybelline it is!

Lipstick - Maybelline's Watershine OR Shu Uemura. I love Maybelline's value and the look of it on my lips. No point spending a bomb on lipsticks since I eat them so much. Also my lips are super sensitive and swells easily. I can't use MANY lip products, especially Lancome (most of their products make my lips intolerably itchy or skin red). Shu Uemura's lipsticks doubles as lip balms. They feel soooo lovely on the lips. Plus the color range is good.

Lipgloss - I don't have a particular favourite. As long as it doesn't make my lip swell. Right now, I am using MAC's lipglass. Ok lor.

And the Superfluous!

Best eyebrow shapers - Haha whatever you call them. I swear by threading. My eyebrows have never looked prettier. I think plucking and cutting don't do it. Threading works. Maybe it's the Indian therapists. They know their eyebrows. I go to Rupini's. $7 a session.

Manicures and Pedicures - Siao. I do them myself. So sinful to indulge in these I think. Once in a looooooooong while is ok.

Best Movie for RocketJim in 2008 - 300. Duh. A close second is Hairspray. Travolta and Walken doing the foxtrot was too sweet! I really enjoyed Peter Chan's Warlords too. When Andy Lau cried, my heart kinda broke too. And Made of Honor starring Patrick Dempsey. That wisecrack. That head of hair. Those blue eyes...The only Caucasian butt I like. Haha!

Best Random Conversation - With Emo. In a cab. Highly random. After I removed the stitches in my gum.

Emo: You bought the horse yet?

Me: *somehow managing to catch on* Not yet. I only have $300++ thousand. Need another $400 thousand. Maybe I'll just get a Lamborghini.

Ok, granted. Only 2 people in the whole world finds this funny. Emo and I lor. I can't imagine what the taxi uncle was thinking. Maybe along the lines of, "Wahh so rich. This girl wanna buy a horse."

It's just a loser game I was talking about on facebook.

Best Thick Skin - This random guy I met at St. James. What the hell was I thinking giving him my number?! ARGH!! The next day he called me and sang a song from Michael Learns to Rock. And then when he asked me out for dinner, I pulled the classic, "I can't make it. Having dinner with my grandma."

Best joke - Ok, fine it isn't a joke that I can replicate here since NOBODY will get it. But my colleague screamed something wrong and SO FUNNY at a Japanese passenger when the seatbelt sign was turned on. I continued laughing for days after. Luckily I wasn't sitting next to her that day.

Best DVD experience - Little Miss Sunshine! Budsey and Boodiboo was trying so hard to cheer me up. This gem of a film did. Thank you. A close second is Michael Jackson's HIStory dvd. Michael Jackson IS KING!!!

Best Song to get me on Dancefloor - Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg's Last Episode. After all these while...it's still The Last Episode.

Best Breakfast Food - Century Egg Porridge. Even after 2 weeks of this, I still want more.

Best Tranny - Me lor! (No no, I think *cough*Dawn Ya.ng*cough* takes the cake) My best friend says my looks kinda changed. And she insisted my nose is different. I know it is odd but I sorta agree with her. I think my nose has a life of its own, it shapeshifts. Anyway is it just me but I really think I look more like a tranny with every passing year!! HOW?!

Yes? No? No wonder I get all these puzzled yet stern glares when I was at Orchard Towers.

Best Internet Find - Trashy.com and Etsy.com. It's all about pleasing other people. heh heh.

Ok I am officially tired out. I will attempt a part 2 next time. If any of you have any further questions about the products or people I go to, please feel free to ask. I did my sex change surgery in Korea. Dr Kim.

Seriously. I am kidding.

Don’t really understand the first parts since me DON'T use any of those products. (though i recognize most names and know them to be expensive stuffs..)

Totally agree with you on Made of Honor and Little Miss Sunshine! They make Emo smile for hours, now THAT is really something!!!

I thought u would crown ‘someone’ else as the thickest skin person we’ve ever known, esp with all that happened during 2008…

And yes, go buy a pony Jimbo!! Lamborghini is too predictable
boring ~

Hello Junny! I never knew Origins has a cosmetic line...what kind of category are u looking for? Skincare wise, I think Clarins is good because those I have used in the past proved to be effective yet gentle. I think Clinique, Biotherm and Lancome isn't all that fantastic... (Altho I think Clinique is the best amongst the 3).

I personally have alot of faith in Shu Uemura. They have light foundations and powders that should suit your skin. To cut it short, Shu Uemura has the least bullshit. Blushers, lipgloss, lipsticks, eyeshadows, eyebrow pencils etc. are FANTASTIC. Even their eyelash curlers are renowned. The only thing terrible about this brand is attitude of the counter-girls. Even those in Japan are pretty unfriendly.

Stila has feminine, girly stuff that looks great in your cosmetic pouch. But I don't find it that fantastic. Anna Sui isn't too bad too although I have a problem with her rampant use of fragrance in all her products.

Paul & Joe has great foundations, primers and powders.

Did I mention too many? :D:D:D:D

I don't use concealers...I should but somehow I just omit them. lol I just go for the natural smokey look. YSL and Bobbi Brown have good concealers and brighteners (YSL is more lightweight). Maybelline's concealer is pretty good too! Only problem is that the color range isn't alot.

Hope these help!

wahhh, you definitely know your stuff all right, babe! i asked the right person! well i only just need foundation and concealer, that's all i ever use anyway cuz i'm such a noob about makeup. i haven't run out of either yet, but i will definitely check out shu uemura next time, snooty counter-girls be damned! lol.

skincare wise, i'm using origins, so far pretty okay. still in search of the best cleanser, though. want one that leaves my face feeling fresh and zilch oil!

i hope all of the brands you mentioned are not doing any animal tesing - that's one reason i abandoned l'oreal and went for origins. unlike you, i can't go for the smokey look cuz my eyebags are too terrible, haha. it's the panda look on me! so i really need a good concealer. will check out the brands you mentioned.

anyway, you should totally start your own makeup line, babe. you can do it!
